Video: Govt. alleges secret meetings in S’pore

Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva today claimed that several common opposition members including presidential candidate Maithripala Sirisena had secretly met representatives of the Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam (TGTE) in Singapore.
 He said the Government would reveal details of their activities during their visit to Singapore.
 The minister said Maithripala Sirisena, Ranil Wickremesinghe, Sarath Fonseka, Chandrika Kumaratunga, Mangala Samaraweera, Hirunika Premachandra and Palani Digambaram had visited Singapore from time to time since November 2.
 “During the same period nine TGTE ministers had also visited Singapore. It’s not a coincidence and people can put two and two together. We will soon reveal what was discussed between the two sides with more details in the future,” he told a news conference held at Sri Lanka Freedom Party Headquarters in Colombo.  
 The minister claimed that the common opposition was plotting with the TGTE to get their support for the opposition election campaign and to divide the country in return.
  “The opposition has betrayed and deceived the people” he said and added that Mr. Sirisena will not abolish the executive presidency as promised. “This is only a slogan he is using to deceive the people,” he said.  ...........video photos

මත්කුඩු ජාවාරමද ශ‍්‍රී ලංකාවේ ව්‍යාප්තව තිබේ. රජයට සම්බන්ධ විවිධ පාර්ශව මත්කුඩු ජාවාරමෙහි නිරත වේ. ඔවුන් අත්අඩංගුවට ගැනීමට රජය ක‍්‍රියා නොකරන බව චම්පික රණවක මහතා පෙන්වා දෙයි. එක් අවස්ථාවක මත්කුඩු කන්ටේනරයක් පිළිබඳ තොරතුරු ලැබිණ. ඡුායාරූප සහිතව එය රජයට ලබාදුන්නද කිසිදු ජාවාරම්කරුවෙකු අත්අඩංගුවට ගැනීමට ක‍්‍රියා නොකෙරිණ. එහෙත් ප‍්‍රධාන මත්ද්‍රව්‍ය ජාවාරම්කරුවන් වෙනුවට සු`ඵ පරිමාණ ජාවාරම්කරුවන් අත්අඩංගුවට ගැනීමට රජය පියවර ගත්තේය. ප‍්‍රධාන ජාවාරම්කරුවන් රජයට සම්බන්ධවීම ඊට හේතුවයි. දේශපාලකයන් සඳහා මනාප රැුස්කිරීමේ සිට විවිධ අවශ්‍යතා සඳහා පක්‍ෂ මාරුව වෙනුවෙන් යොමුකරවීමටද එම මුදල් භාවිත කෙරේ. එවැනි රජයකට විරෝධය පළකිරීම සඳහා රජයෙන් පිටතට පැමිණි බව මාවනැල්ල රැුළියේදී රණවක් මහතා අවධාරණය කළේය. මත්කුඩු කල්ලි වලින් රට ගලවා ගැනීමටත් ඔවුන්ට දැඩි දඩුවම් පැමිණ වීමටත් මෛත‍්‍රීපාල සිරිසේන මහතාගේ ජනාධිපතිධුරය යටතේ නව රජයෙන් පියවර ගන්නා බවටද රණවක මහතා ප‍්‍රතිඥා දුන්නේය.

ආසනික් මාෆියාවක් ද ක‍්‍රියාත්මක වෙයි. රජරට ලක්‍ෂ 2 ක පමණ පිරිසක් වකුගඩු රෝගයෙන් පීඩා විඳිති තත්වය කෙරෙහි අවධානය යොමුකර කෘෂි රසායන ද්‍රව්‍ය කිහිපයක් තහනම් කිරීමට රජයට මෛත‍්‍රීපාල සිරිසේන මහතාගේ සෞඛ්‍ය අමාත්‍යධුරය යටතේ යෝජනා කෙරිණ. එහෙත් රජය ඊට අවශ්‍ය ක‍්‍රියාමාර්ග නොගත් බව රණවක මහතා පෙන්වා දෙයි. වකුගඩු රෝග හේතුවෙන් වාර්ෂිකව 15,000 ක මිය ගියද සංවේදී නායකයාගේ හදවත ඊට උණුවන්නේ නැතැයි රණවක මහතා අවධාරණය කළේය. එවැනි තත්ත්වයක් යටතේ රජයෙන් ඉවත් වීමට තීරණය කෙරිණ.

ඒ අනුව ජනවාරි 8 වනදාට රාජපක්‍ෂ පවුල් කල්ලිය හා ජාවාරම්කාර කල්ලි පරදවා මෛත‍්‍රීපාල සිරිසේන මහතා ජනාධිපතිධුරයට පත්කිරීමට සැවොම එක්විය යුතු බව පාඨලි චම්පික රණවක මහතා අවධාරණය කළේය.

Colombo Port City will be scrapped: Ranil

Opposition United National Party (UNP) Leader Ranil Wickremsinghe said today the new government, which would be formed by the joint opposition after the current regime was defeated at the January 8 elections, would scrap the Colombo Port City Project.

Mr. Wickremesinghe told tourist industry leaders who met him today that the project would be scrapped because it would end up destroying the coastal belt from Negombo to Beruwala.
 He said the international airport at Mattala would be made viable and put to better economic use while a new airport would be constructed in the Eastern Province.
 Mr. Wickremesinghe said the new government would put in place a programme on a long-term basis to attract high-spending tourists with the intention of converting Sri Lanka into a major tourist hub by 2025.  “We will make sure that the tourist industry will provide all stakeholders with equal opportunities and a level playing field,” he added while answering several questions posed by the industrialists.

Video: I finished 75% of the war: CBK

Former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga today staked a bigger claim for the war victory by reiterating that 75 per cent of the LTTE-held territory was cleared during her tenure.

She told a news conference held at her official residence that at the time she took over the presidency in 1994, the entire northern region -- barring five or six military bases at Mannar, Talaimannar, Kankesanturai, Point Pedro, Mullaitivu and Vavuniya in the central part of the North -- was controlled by LTTE leader Velupullai Prabhakaran.

Ms. Kumaratunga said Prabhakaran was calling the shots in the North and even dictating terms to the government officials............

Will not allow offenders to flee: Maithri

Common opposition presidential candidate Maithripala Sirisena said he would not allow those who faced allegations of corruption to leave the country, if he were elected to office in January.

"There are many who are waiting to flee if we win the Presidential Election. I will not allow anyone to flee the country if they were alleged to have been involved in corruption," he said speaking at the launch of the book titled ‘Alapalu Arthikaya’ (Doom and Boom Economy) written by former Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka.
 Mr. Sirisena recalled how he was prevented from speaking against corruption when he was in the government.
 Mr. Ranawaka in his speech alleged that several highways were over estimated by exorbitant amounts.
 Accordingly, he said the Kottawa-Galle Stretch of the Southern Expressway was over estimated by 281 per cent, Katunayake Expressway by 505 per cent, Galle-Matara stretch of the Southern Expressway by 705 per cent and the Kadawatha-Kerawalapitiya Circular Road by 2062 per cent.
 Former Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne said the national government, which the opposition would form would introduce a code of conduct for the legislators.

CaFFE claims it provided evidence of polls law violations to EC, but no action

The Campaign for Free and Fair Election (CaFFE) submitted photographs to the Election Commissioner (EC) Mahinda Deshapriya on Sunday, showing  how the police department misused public money allocated to them to remove cut-outs.

 Executive Director of CaFFE, Ranjith Tennakoon told The Island that most of the big cut-outs in Chilaw, Arachchikattuwa, Anuradhapura, Kadawatha and Ratnapura were being covered haphazardly with paper, pieces of cloths or polythene, instead of removing them completely.

He claimed that they had even informed the Assistant Election Commissioner and Government Agent in Puttalam on Saturday around 10.00 a.m. regarding the matter, but until Monday 12.00 noon nothing had been removed, though they promised verbally to remove them completely within two days.

 "We will provide media tomorrow (December 16) a unique picture of a very senior police officer, if the EC failed to take any action after submitting that picture today (December 15)," he said.

 He said EC had been informed twice by through two letters coupled with pictures, but Deshapriya had not replied their letters until noon and according to their observation nothing had taken place regarding those violations of election laws by the incumbent President Mahinda Rajapaksa....................

JHU General Secretary Patali Champika Ranawaka, MP, says the LTTE rump should be asked whether it had received payment from the then Premier Mahinda Rajapaksa Camp in the run-up to Nov. 17, 2005 presidential election.

Referring to a statement made by an Opposition MP (not a UNPer), UNP MP Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe, PC, said that the LTTE had facilitated Rajapaksa’s victory by depriving UNP presidential candidate Ranil Wickremesinghe of Tamil voters in the Northern Province. Rajapaksa alleged that the government was making an attempt to discourage Tamil voters in the run-up to January 8, 2014 presidential election.

Ranawaka and Rajapakshe were addressing the media on Sunday (Dec 14) at Opposition presidential candidate Maithripala Sirisena’s campaign office at Havelock Road.

They side-stepped The Island query whether they believed the LTTE had paved the way for its own annihilation by facilitating Premier Rajapaksa’s win............

ඉන් පැමිණිලි 32ක්‌ ඉදිරිපත්වී ඇත්තේ මැතිවරණ ප්‍රචණ්‌ඩ ක්‍රියා සම්බන්ධයෙන් බව එම සංවිධානය නිකුත් කළ නිවේදනයක දැක්‌වේ. ඒ අතර ගිනි අවි හා බෝම්බ භාවිතයෙන් සිදුකළ ප්‍රචණ්‌ඩ ක්‍රියා 9ක්‌ සහ මහජන දේපළ අයථා පරිහරණය පිළිබඳ පැමිණිලි 43ක්‌ද වාර්තාවී ඇතැයි කැෙෆ් සංවිධානය වැඩිදුරටත් නිවේදනය කරයි.

SLMC talks on whom to back end in stalement

Yesterday’s top level talks among the leaders of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress to decide whether it would support President Mahinda Rajapaksa or common opposition candidate Maithripala Sirisena ended inconclusively, party sources said.

It was agreed that a top level SLMC delegation led by party Leader Justice Minister Rauff Hakeem would meet key ministers of the government today (15) for discussions and the SLMC’s decision would be made on the basis of the outcome of today’s meeting.........

Different pacts on presidency: Ranawaka defends Sirisena

‘Rajapaksa also blew hot and cold on abolishing presidency in 2005’

JHU General Secretary Patali Champika Ranawaka, MP yesterday strongly defended Opposition presidential candidate Maithripala Sirisena's right to reach two different electoral pacts with the Opposition coalition backing him and the JHU.

MP Ranawaka was responding to government allegations that Maithripala Sirisena had deceived the electorate by having two different agreements. After having pledged support to President Mahinda Rajapaksa, former JHU Deputy General Secretary Udaya Gammanpila said that Sirisena had assured a section of the Opposition that the presidency would be abolished while promising the JHU to introduce far reaching constitutional reforms to reduce the powers of the President.

Addressing the media at Maithripala Sirisena's campaign office at Havelock road, MP Ranawaka pointed out that the then Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa had adopted a similar strategy at Nov. 2005 presidential poll. Ranawaka said that Premier Rajapaksa reached an agreement with the JVP to do away with the presidency, whereas his pact with the JHU was meant to repeal dictatorial powers enjoyed by the president.

The JHU General Secretary emphasised the pivotal importance of restoring democracy by empowering parliament and the judiciary.

Opposition: Govt. propaganda blitz very counterproductive

... alleges Gotabhaya spearheading campaign

The coalition supporting Opposition presidential candidate Maithripala Sirisena, MP, yesterday claimed that incumbent President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s massive propaganda campaign wouldn’t help him secure a third term at Jan. 8, 2015 presidential election.

Instead, the costly government project could be advantageous to Maithripala Sirisena, the media was told at a press conference held at an Opposition campaign office at Havelock Road.

Calling the government propaganda campaign repulsive, UNP MP Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe, PC, claimed that the Rajapaksas had earned the wrath of the people for spending so much on the re-election project.

MP Rajapakshe said that the electorate couldn’t be deceived by propaganda alone. In fact, the level of spending on propaganda had raised many an eyebrow, the MP said, urging people to exercise their franchise in support of Maithripala Sirisena.
