ශ්‍රී ලංකා ප්‍රජාතාන්ත්‍රික සමාජවාදී ජනරජයේ 6 වැනි විධායක ජනාධිපති ලෙස මෛත්‍රීපාල සිරිසේන මහතා ඊයේ (09 වැනිදා) පස්‌වරු 6.20 ට යෙදුණු සුබ මොහොතින් කොළඹ නිදහස්‌ චතුරශ්‍රයේ පැවැති චාම් උත්සවයකදී ශ්‍රේෂ්ඨාධිකරණයේ ජ්‍යෙෂ්ඨතම විනිසුරු කේ. ශ්‍රී පවන් මහතා ඉදිරියේ දිවුරුම් දුන්නේය.
මෛත්‍රීපාල සිරිසේන මහතා විධායක ජනාධිපති ධුරයේ දිවුරුම් දීමෙන් පසු අගමැති ලෙස එක්‌සත් ජාතික පක්‍ෂ නායක රනිල් වික්‍රමසිංහ මහතා අභිනව ජනාධිපති මෛත්‍රීපාල සිරිසේන මහතා ඉදිරියේ දිවුරුම් දුන්නේය.
මෙම අවස්‌ථාවට හිටපු ජනාධිපතිනි චන්ද්‍රිකා බණ්‌ඩාරනායක කුමාරතුංග මහත්මිය ද මෛත්‍රීපාල සිරිසේන මහතාගේ බිරිඳ සහ දූ දරුවෝ ද එක්‌සත් ජාතික පක්‍ෂ පාර්ලිමේන්තු මන්ත්‍රීවරු ද සහභාගි වූහ.
මෛත්‍රීපාල සිරිසේන මහතාට ජනාධිපතිවරයා ලෙස දිවුරුම් දීමට අදාළ ලේඛනය හිටපු ජනාධිපති ලේකම් ලලිත් වීරතුංග මහතා විසින් ලබාදෙන ලදී.
ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ 6 වැනි ජනාධිපතිවරයා ලෙස දිවුරුම් දීම සඳහා මෛත්‍රීපාල සිරිසේන මහතා පස්‌වරු 6.00 ට පමණ නිදහස්‌ චතුරශ්‍රය වෙත පැමිණියේය.
එහිදී දැරියන් පිරිසක්‌ විසින් ජය මංගල ගාථා ගායනා කරමින් මෛත්‍රීපාල සිරිසේන මහතා පිළිගන්නා ලදී.

හැට දෙලක්‍ෂයකට අධික ඡන්ද සංඛ්‍යාවක්‌ හිමිකර ගනිමින් නව ප්‍රජාතන්ත්‍රවාදී පෙරමුණේ අපේක්‍ෂක මෛත්‍රීපාල සිරිසේන මහතා පෙරේදා (08 වැනිදා) පැවැති හත්වැනි ජනාධිපතිවරණයෙන් විශිෂ්ට ලෙස ජයග්‍රහණයක්‌ ලබා ශ්‍රී ලංකා ජනරජයේ නව ජනාධිපති පදවියට පත්විය.
විපක්‍ෂයේ පොදු අපේක්‍ෂක ලෙස ජනාධිපතිවරණයට තරග කළ මෛත්‍රීපාල සිරිසේන මහතා ඡන්ද හැටදෙලක්‍ෂ දහහත් දහස්‌ එකසිය හැට දෙකක්‌ ලබාගැනීමට සමත් වූ අතර එය වලංගු ඡන්ද සංඛ්‍යාවෙන් සියයට 51.28 කි.
ජනාධිපතිවරණයේ ප්‍රධාන අපේක්‍ෂකයකු ලෙස තරග කළ හිටපු ජනාධිපති මහින්ද රාජපක්‍ෂ මහතාට ලබාගත හැකිවූයේ ඡන්ද පනස්‌හත් ලක්‍ෂ හැටඅට දහස්‌ අනූවක්‌ පමණි. එය වලංගු ඡන්ද සංඛ්‍යාවෙන් සියයට 47.58 කි.

ජනාධිපති මැතිවරණ ඉතිහාසයේ වැඩිම ඡන්ද ප්‍රතිශතයක්‌ ඡන්ද ප්‍රකාශ වූයේ මෙවර වීම විශේෂත්වයකි. එනම් ලියාපදිංචි ඡන්දදායකයන්ගෙන් සියයට 81.52 ක්‌ මෙවර ඡන්දය ප්‍රකාශ කර තිබේ. එම ප්‍රමාණය 12264377 කි. එයින් ඡන්ද 140925 ක්‌ ප්‍රතික්‍ෂේප වී තිබේ.
ඡන්ද විමසීම සිදුකළ දිස්‌ත්‍රික්‌ක විසිදෙකෙන් දොළහක්‌ මෛත්‍රීපාල සිරිසේන මහතා ජයගත්තේය. කොළඹ, ගම්පහ, මහනුවර, නුවරඑළිය, යාපනය, වන්නි, මඩකලපුව, දිගාමඩුල්ල, ත්‍රිකුණාමලය, පොලොන්නරුව, බදුල්ල හා පුත්තලම එම දිස්‌ත්‍රික්‌ක වෙයි. මහින්ද රාජපක්‍ෂ මහතා කළුතර, මාතලේ, ගාල්ල, මාතර, හම්බන්තොට, කුරුණෑගල, අනුරාධපුර, රත්නපුර, කෑගල්ල හා මොනරාගල දිස්‌ත්‍රික්‌ක 10 ජයග්‍රහණය කරනු ලැබීය.
මෙවර ඡන්ද ප්‍රකාශ කිරීමට ඡන්දදායකයන්ගේ විශාල උනන්දුවක්‌ දක්‌නට ලැබිණි. ඡන්ද විමසීම සිදු කළ දින පෙරවරුවේ ඡන්ද මධ්‍යස්‌ථානවල දිගු පෝලිම් දක්‌නට ලැබිණි.
ඡන්ද ප්‍රතිඵලවලට අනුව ඡන්ද කොට්‌ඨාස 160 න් 79 ක්‌ මෛත්‍රීපාල සිරිසේන මහතාට හිමිවිය. කොළඹ දිස්‌ත්‍රික්‌කයේ මැදකොළඹ, උතුරු කොළඹ, නැගෙනහිර කොළඹ, බටහිර කොළඹ, බොරැල්ල, දෙහිවල, රත්මලාන, කොලොන්නාව, මොරටුව මෛත්‍රීපාල සිරිසේන මහතාට හිමිවිය. නුවරඑළිය මස්‌කෙළිය ආසනය වැඩි ඡන්ද එක්‌ලක්‍ෂ පහළොස්‌දහසකින් ද, ත්‍රිකුණාමලය තිස්‌හත්දහසකින්ද, කල්කුඩා, මුතූර් පනස්‌දහසකින් ද මඩකලපුව 76000 කින් ද, පොතුවිල් 60000 කින් ද, වවුනියාව, කල්මුණේ 41000 කින් ද පොලොන්නරුව 30000 කින් පමණ ද වැඩි ඡන්ද ලබාගැනීමට ඔහුට හැකිවිය. උතුරු හා නැගෙනහිර පළාත් දෙකින් වැඩිම ඡන්ද සිරිසේන මහතාට හිමි වූ අතර එහි සේරුවිල හා අම්පාර කොට්‌ඨාස දෙක පමණක්‌ රාජපක්‍ෂ මහතාට ජය ගැනීමට හැකිවිය.
මහින්ද රාජපක්‍ෂ මහතාට ඡන්ද කොට්‌ඨාස 81 ක බලය හිමිවිය. හම්බන්තොට, අනුරාධපුරය, මොනරාගල යන දිස්‌ත්‍රික්‌ක සම්පූර්ණයෙන්ම ඔහුට හිමි වූ අතර ගාල්ල දිස්‌ත්‍රික්‌කයේ ආසන 9 ක්‌, මාතර ආසන 06 ක්‌, කුරුණෑගල ආසන 12 ක්‌, කෑගල්ල ආසන 8 ක්‌ ජයගැනීමට මහින්ද රාජපක්‍ෂ මහතාට හැකිවිය.
ඡන්ද විමසීම පෙරේදා (08 දා) සිදුකෙරුණු අතර තැපැල් ඡන්ද ගණන් කිරීම පස්‌වරු 4.00 ටත් ආසන මට්‌ටමින් ගණන් කිරීම සවස 7.00 ටත් ආරම්භ විය. ඒ අනුව පළමු ඡන්ද ප්‍රතිඵලය ලෙස රත්නපුර දිස්‌ත්‍රික්‌ තැපැල් ඡන්ද ප්‍රතිඵල රාත්‍රි 11.35 ට පමණ නිකුත් කෙරුණු අතර අවසන් සමස්‌ත ප්‍රතිඵල පිළිබඳ නිවේදනය පෙරවරු 11.45 ට මැතිවරණ කොමසාරිස්‌වරයා විසින් නිවේදනය කරනු ලැබීය.

Washington: The US looks forward to working with Sri Lankan president-elect Maithripala Sirisena, Secretary of State John Kerry today said, as he commended outgoing President Mahinda Rajapaksa for accepting the election results.
"I look forward to working with President-elect Maithripala Sirisena as his new government works to implement its campaign platform of a Sri Lanka that is peaceful, inclusive, democratic, and prosperous," Kerry said in a statement soon after Rajapaksa conceded defeat.
"I commend President Rajapaksa for accepting the results of the election in the proud tradition of peaceful and orderly transfers of power in Sri Lanka. His words tonight about accepting the verdict of the people and moving forward are important," Kerry said.
ajapaksa had called the election two years ahead of schedule, hoping to win a record third six-year term before the defeat of the Tamil Tigers fades in the memory of the people of the island which saw a three decades war over the demand of a separate Tamil Eelam.
There was a high voter turn-out for the elections held yesterday.
"The Sri Lankan people deserve great credit on the successful conclusion of their elections. They turned out in great numbers to exercise their democratic rights and every vote was a victory for Sri Lanka," Kerry said.
"The United States applauds the Sri Lankan Elections Commissioner, the security forces, Sri Lankan civil society, and the candidates themselves for making sure this election was not marred by unrest and for ensuring a significant drop in campaign-related violence. It will be important for that effort to continue in the coming days," he added.

Election Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya officially declared Maithripala Sirisena as the new President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka a short while ago.
Making the official declaration in terms of the powers vested in him by the Constitution, Deshapriya said that Mr. Sirisena obtained a majority of 51.28% votes, and is therefore the new President of the country.
Addressing the media and the candidates, at the Elections Department, he thanked the outgoing President for ensuring a peaceful election and a transfer of power thereafter.

The National Democratic Front (NDF) yesterday said that President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s attempt to hijack the electoral process by abusing military and government power at yesterday’s Presidential Election had failed badly due to the indefatigable efforts of the Polls Chief and the Inspector General of Police.

Speaking on behalf of the NDF Presidential candidate Maithripala Sirisena, his Election Agent Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe MP told The Island shortly after the counting process had begun that the Rajapaksa regime was trying to take the credit for a largely peaceful and major incident free polling day, but its blatant violation of election laws had been prevented due to the indefatigable efforts of the Elections Commissioner (EC) Mahinda Deshapriya and the Inspector General of Police N. K. Illagakoon.

The EC’s directive to the IGP ‘shoot to the head’ had worked wonders and that was the reason why there had been no violent incidents, Wijeyadasa noted.

The military had, he said, been used liberally especially in the North to intimidate Tamil voters even on polling day which had resulted in some of them keeping away, but the presence of the Police with specific instructions to shoot had thwarted that attempt to a large extent.

Wijeyadasa regretted that President Rajapaksa had acted in the most disgraceful manner by claiming that UNP Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa would join him at Kesbewa during his final campaign meeting and going to the extent of using the Rupavahini Corporation to announce yesterday morning that Premadasa had joined the government . "This sort of thing never happened before. The false allegation was corrected only around 12 noon after some damage had been done and that too after the EC had gone to the television station and insisted that a correction be made. Throughout the campaign our supporters were attacked, killed and election stages burnt," he said, adding that the President had even taken R. A. Sirisena another candidate, who had paraded as Maithripala Sirrisena to the Medamulana Polling station and made a public spectacle of him, which would go down as biggest joke of the entire election.

ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ හත්වැනි ජනාධිපතිවරණයේ ඡන්ද විමසීම මින් මොහොතකට පෙර නිමාවට පත්විය.
කිසිදු බරපතල ප්‍රචණ්ඩ ක්‍රියාවක් හෝ බරපතල මැතිවරණ දූෂණ කිසිවක්ද වාර්තා නොවෙමින් ඡන්ද විමසීමඉතා සාමකාමීව පැවැත්වීම මෙවර මැතිවරණයේ විශේෂත්වයක් බව දෙස්, විදෙස් නිරීක්ෂකයෝ පවසති.
"ප්‍රචණ්ඩ ක්‍රියා සිදු නොවුනේ ප්‍රචණ්ඩ ක්‍රියා බලාපොරොත්තු වුන නිසා වෙන්නත් පුළුවන්. ඒත් මට බොහොම සතුටුයි ඒ ගැන,"යනුවෙන් ඡන්ද මධ්‍යස්තාන 13 ක පමණ සංචාරය කළ එක් විදේශීය මැතිවරණ නිරීක්ෂකයෙක් බීබීසී සංදේශයට පැවසීය.
සියලුම ඡන්ද පෙට්ටි ඡන්ද ගණන් කිරීමේ මධ්‍යස්තානවලට ගෙනෙන තුරු ඡන්ද ගණන් කිරීම ආරම්භ නොවන බව මැතිවරණ කොමසාරිස් මහින්ද දේශප්‍රිය බීබීසී යට පැවසීය.
රාත්‍රී 7 පමණ වනවිට ඡන්ද ගණන් කිරීම ආරම්භ කිරීමට හැකි වනු ඇතැයි ඔහු විශ්වාසය පළ කළේය.

Kerry speaks with Rajapaksa

Ahead of presidential elections, US Secretary of State John Kerry has spoken with President Mahinda Rajapaksa and expressed concern over violence in parts of the country during campaigning.
"The United States supports a free and fair electoral process in Sri Lanka that is credible, peaceful and inclusive," State Department Spokesperson Jen Psaki told reporters at her daily news conference.
"To that end, Secretary Kerry called the Sri Lankan President yesterday (Tuesday, January 6, local US time) to underscore the government's responsibility to ensure the January 8th elections will be free from violence and intimidation and that the vote counting is carried out credibly and transparently," Psaki said when asked about the violence in Sri Lanka ahead of the election.
Several human rights bodies have expressed concern over the increase in violence in Sri Lanka in the run up to the polls.

"Of course, he (Kerry) and we all had seen the reports that you referenced. We will continue to monitor the situation in Sri Lanka," Psaki said. We urge the government, its election officials and police, all political and actors to ensure access to all vote centers for the voters to vote and counting centers for all international and domestic observers," she said.
"We're concerned about reports of violence and urge the government to ensure transparent and credible investigation into any allegation of fraud or violence," she added.(PTI)

Polls monitors express concern

Election monitoring organisations yesterday urged all stakeholders to ensure there would be no violence in the aftermath of the election.
They, however, expressed concern about the possibility of violence spiking up either spontaneously or in a planned manner in the post-election period.
The joint statement was signed by Executive Director, People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL), Rohana Hettiarachchi, Executive Director, Centre for Monitoring Election Violence (CMEV) Dr. Paikiasothy Saravanamuttu, Executive Director, Transparency International Sri Lanka (TISL) S. Ranugge, Executive Director, Campaign for Free and Elections (CaFFE) Keerthi Tennakoon, Director, Movement for Free & Fair Elections (MFFE) Manori Kalugampitiya, National Coordinator, Mothers and Daughters of Lanka (MDL) Nimalka Fernando/Daya Herath.
Hettiarachchi said it was the responsibility of political parties to ensure that their members did not take the law into their own hands.
The Executive Director PAFFREL said the postal voting in the election had been conducted in a peaceful atmosphere. "Only two incidents have been reported. Some incidents with respect to propaganda including the display of cutouts have also been reported."
Hettiarachchi said there had been a large number of incidents of violence perpetrated in full view of the public in most cases.

Discouraging northern electorate: Army rejects poll monitors’ allegations

The armed forces wouldn’t be deployed in the Northern Province or any other part of the country for today’s presidential poll unless police headquarters requested for assistance, Military Spokesman Brig. Ruwan Wanigasooriya told The Island yesterday. "The armed forces will be confined to barracks", he stressed.
The military spokesman was responding to accusations made by the Centre for Monitoring Election Violence (CMEV) at Tuesday’s media briefing held at Colombo Hilton Residence.
CMEV spokesperson Dr. Pakiasothy Saravanamuttu and its chief coordinator D.M. Dissanayaka accused the government of instilling fear among the northern electorate by deploying the army in the guise of providing security. They predicted post-war military presence in the Northern Province could be detrimental to the electoral process.
Brig. Wanigasooriya insisted that such allegations were meant to tarnish the image of the country.
