SLMC talks on whom to back end in stalement

Yesterday’s top level talks among the leaders of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress to decide whether it would support President Mahinda Rajapaksa or common opposition candidate Maithripala Sirisena ended inconclusively, party sources said.

It was agreed that a top level SLMC delegation led by party Leader Justice Minister Rauff Hakeem would meet key ministers of the government today (15) for discussions and the SLMC’s decision would be made on the basis of the outcome of today’s meeting.........

Different pacts on presidency: Ranawaka defends Sirisena

‘Rajapaksa also blew hot and cold on abolishing presidency in 2005’

JHU General Secretary Patali Champika Ranawaka, MP yesterday strongly defended Opposition presidential candidate Maithripala Sirisena's right to reach two different electoral pacts with the Opposition coalition backing him and the JHU.

MP Ranawaka was responding to government allegations that Maithripala Sirisena had deceived the electorate by having two different agreements. After having pledged support to President Mahinda Rajapaksa, former JHU Deputy General Secretary Udaya Gammanpila said that Sirisena had assured a section of the Opposition that the presidency would be abolished while promising the JHU to introduce far reaching constitutional reforms to reduce the powers of the President.

Addressing the media at Maithripala Sirisena's campaign office at Havelock road, MP Ranawaka pointed out that the then Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa had adopted a similar strategy at Nov. 2005 presidential poll. Ranawaka said that Premier Rajapaksa reached an agreement with the JVP to do away with the presidency, whereas his pact with the JHU was meant to repeal dictatorial powers enjoyed by the president.

The JHU General Secretary emphasised the pivotal importance of restoring democracy by empowering parliament and the judiciary.

Opposition: Govt. propaganda blitz very counterproductive

... alleges Gotabhaya spearheading campaign

The coalition supporting Opposition presidential candidate Maithripala Sirisena, MP, yesterday claimed that incumbent President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s massive propaganda campaign wouldn’t help him secure a third term at Jan. 8, 2015 presidential election.

Instead, the costly government project could be advantageous to Maithripala Sirisena, the media was told at a press conference held at an Opposition campaign office at Havelock Road.

Calling the government propaganda campaign repulsive, UNP MP Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe, PC, claimed that the Rajapaksas had earned the wrath of the people for spending so much on the re-election project.

MP Rajapakshe said that the electorate couldn’t be deceived by propaganda alone. In fact, the level of spending on propaganda had raised many an eyebrow, the MP said, urging people to exercise their franchise in support of Maithripala Sirisena.

Gotabhaya defends ex-military men engaging in politics

‘If terrorists can enter politics, why not forces personnel?’

Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa yesterday said that those who had accused him of using retired military personnel in President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s campaign had conveniently forgotten Sarath Fonseka entering politics while still holding office as Chief of Defence Staff (CDS). Fonseka held the rank of General at that time.

Defence Secretary said that President Rajapaksa had promptly accepted the former army commander’s letter of resignation when the latter declared his intention to contest the 2010 presidential election.

The Defence Secretary was responding to Opposition allegation that he was using retired service personnel in President Rajapaksa’s campaign.

Sinister move to get Tamils boycott poll: Champika

There was a sinister move by some local and international forces to change the mindset of the Tamil community in order to get them boycott the January Presidential election, Former Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka charged today.

Mr. Ranawaka charged that this was to be done by a campaign aimed at making the Tamil community understand that this election was not relevant to them as it would not bring solutions to the issues faced by them.

This, the former Minister said, was wrong as this election was relevant to everyone in the country as it was all about bringing political and social change.

He was responding to a question raised by journalists as to whether there was contradiction on the MoUs singed by the common candidate Maithripala Sirisena with the JHU and other parties.

He said the incumbent President Mahinda Rajapaksa did the same thing in 2005 as the MoU signed with JVP said he would abolish the Executive Presidency, while the MoU with JHU said he would reform it.
“Reforming or abolishing does not matter as powers of the Executive President enjoy as of now would be removed if the common opposition candidate emerge victorious at the presidential election,” he said.

රණවිරුවන්ට පිඟන් හෝදන්න දෙන්නේ නෑ- මෛත්‍රී කියයි

කුරුණෑගලදී අද (14) පැවති පොදු අපේක්ෂක මෛත්‍රිපාල සිරිසේන මහතාගේ ජන හමුවකදී මෙරට සිදුවන දූෂණ වංචා හෙළි කරමින් මෛත්‍රිපාල සිරිසේන මහතා රැස්ව සිටි පිරිස ඇමතීය.

ළඟ හිටපු අය මහ රජාණනි කියල ගීත ගයන කොට මහින්ද රාජපක්ෂ මහත්තයට හිතෙන්න ඇති ඇත්තටම රජෙක් වෙන්න. රාජකීය හීනයක් තිබුණට මේ රටේ තිබෙන්නේ ප්‍රජාතන්ත්‍රවාදී ක්‍රමයක්. එතුමට ඒක අමතක වුණා. ඒක අපිට අමතක කළ නොහැකි නිසා රාජිත ඇමතිතුමා, මම හොරකම, නාස්තිය, දූෂණයට විරුද්ධව එළියට බැස්සා.

අද කරන සංවර්ධන වැඩ අපි එකක්වත් නවත්වන්නේ නෑ. මීට වඩා විනිවිදභාවයකින් යුතුව මේ මුදල්වලින් මීට වඩා තුන් ගුණයක් වැඩ අපි කරනවා.

ව්‍යාපෘතියක් හදද්දී ඇස්තමේන්තු කරන්නේ 2/3 ක් ඇරලා. ඒවා පැත්තක සිටින අයගේ සාක්කුවට. උතුරු දුම්රිය මාර්ගය හදන්න මුලින්ම කිලෝමීටරයකට රුපියල් මිලියන 44 ක් තමයි ඇස්තමේන්තු කළේ. ඒ වෙනුවට රුපියල් මිලියන 340 ක් දාලා අලුතින් ඇස්තමේන්තු හදල තමයි ඒක හැදුවේ.

අපි හදන අලුත් ආණ්ඩුව හැම රජයේ සේවකයකුටම ඔළුව උස්සල ඉන්න පුළුවන් විදියට ස්වාධීනව ඔළුව උස්සන ආර්ථිකයක් හදනවා. පෞද්ගලික අංශයේ රැකියා කරන ලක්ෂ 24 ට අපේ අලුත් ආණ්ඩුවෙන් විශ්‍රාම වැටුප් ලබා දෙනවා. අවම වැටුපක් ලබා දෙනවා. විදෙස් ශ්‍රමිකයන්ට ස්ථිරවම විශ්‍රාම වැටුපක් ලබා දෙනවා.

අද රණවිරුවන් පිඟන් හෝදනවා. ගල් කඩනවා, ලොක්කන්ගේ ගෙදර තණකොළ කපනවා. අද රණවිරුවා කම්කරුවෙක් කරලා. නිල ඇඳුමට ගරුත්වයක් දී ත්‍රිවිධ හමුදාවේ සැමදෙනාටම සැබෑ ගෞරවය අපි දෙනවා. ත්‍රිවිධ හමුදාවේ සියලු සාමාජිකයන්ට ගරුත්වයක් සහිතව වෘත්තීයේ නියැලෙන්න ඉඩ සලසනවා.

තාරුණ්‍යයට හෙටක් බාලගිරි දෝෂය වගේ. තාරුණ්‍යයට අදක් නෑ හැමදාම හෙටක් විතරයි. අසරණ ජනතාවගේ සල්ලි වලින් කෝටි දහස් ගාණක් වියදම් කර ඇඹිලිපිටියේ අලුත් ජනාධිපති මන්දිරයක් හැදුවා. අලුත් හෙලිකොප්ටර් 6 ක් ගෙනාවා. වෙනම එක එක්කෙනාට පයිලට්ල වෙන්කරගත්තා. රටක ජනතාවගේ නිදහස හා ප්‍රජාතන්ත්‍රවාදය වෙනුවෙන් මම ජීවිතය පූජා කරන්න ලෑස්තිවෙලයි මේ සටනට බැස්සේ............

යහපත් පාලනයක්‌ ඇති කරනවා

ජනවාරි 8 වැනිදා තමන් ජයග්‍රහණය ලබන බවත් ඉන් පසු බිහිකරන සර්වපාක්‍ෂික ආණ්‌ඩුවක්‌ යටතේ රටේ යහපාලනයක්‌ ඇති කර විනයගරුක රටක්‌ ගොඩනගන බවත් ජනාධිපතිවරණ පොදු අපේක්‍ෂක මෛත්‍රීපාල සිරිසේන මහතා අනුරාධපුර තලාව පැවැති මැතිවරණ ප්‍රචාරක රැලියක්‌ අමතා පෙරේදා (13 දා) පැවසීය.
ජයග්‍රහණයෙන් පසු රට සංවර්ධනය කර මහින්ද රාජපක්‍ෂ මහතා ජනතාවට යහපත් අනාගතයක්‌ උදාකර දෙනු ඇතැයි විශ්වාස කළ ද මේ වන විට ඒ සියලු බලාපොරොත්තු කඩවී රට හැම අතින්ම විනාශය කරාගෙන ගොස්‌ තිබෙන බව හෙතෙම කීය.
එහිදී තවදුරටත් අදහස්‌ දැක්‌වූ මෛත්‍රීපාල සිරිසේන මහතා මෙසේ ද කීය.
අපි බලාපොරොත්තු වුණා 2009 මැයි මස 18 වැනිදා ප්‍රභාකරන් ඝාතනය වීමත් සමඟ මහින්ද රාජපක්‍ෂ මහත්තයා කාටත් පිළිගත හැකි හොඳ දේශපාලන ගමනක්‌ යයි කියලා. නමුත් ඔහු කළේ ජනතාවගේ නිදහස ප්‍රජාතන්ත්‍රවාදය වළ දමා, ජනතාවගේ දුගී බව නොසලකා ඔවුන් පීඩනයට පත්කරමින් රට අගාධයට තල්ලු කිරීමයි.
මහින්ද රාජපක්‍ෂ මහත්තයා 2010 පසු කිසිම ඇමැතිවරයෙක්‌ කියන දේකට ඇහුම්කන් දුන්නේ නැහැ. උගත් බුද්ධිමත් මේ රටේ ප්‍රබුද්ධ ජනතාව කියන දේවල්වලට ඇහුම්කන් දුන්නේ නැහැ. ජනතා හඬට කන්දුන්නේ නැහැ. කිසිම කෙනෙකුගේ හඬකට කන් නොදුන් රාජපක්‍ෂ මහත්තයා ඔහුගේ පවුලේ බලය ශක්‌තිමත් කරගනිමින් මුළු මහත් රටේ දේපළ පෞද්ගලික පරිහරණය සඳහා පාවිච්චි කරමින් වැරැදි ගමනක්‌ යැමට පටන් ගත්තා. ඒ නිසා අපට සිදුවුණා මේ දූෂිත තත්ත්වය වෙනස්‌ කිරීමට නායකත්වය ගන්න. අපි ගත්ත ඒ තීරණය දැන් සාර්ථක වී තිබෙනවා..........

විනය ගරුක රටක්‌ හදනවා

තුන්වැනි වරට තමන් ජනවරමක්‌ ඉල්ලා සිටින්නේ විනයගරුක සමාජයක්‌ රටේ ස්‌ථාපිත කිරීමට යෑයි ජනාධිපති මහින්ද රාජපක්‍ෂ මහතා පෙරේදා (13 දා) මාතලේ නගරයේ පැවැති ජනහමුවකදී පැවැසීය.
2005 වසරේ තමන් ජනාධිපතිවරණයට ඉදිරිපත් වුණේ යුද්ධය නැති කර සාමය උදාකර දී රටේ ඒකීය බව ඇති කිරීමට බවත් ඉන් අනතුරුව 2010 දී තමන් ආවේ රට සංවර්ධනය කිරීමට බවත් හෙතෙම සඳහන් කළේය.

අභියෝග ජය ගැනීමට හැකි වූවා සේම මෙවර ජනාධිපතිවරණය ජයග්‍රහණයත් සමඟ විනයගරුක සමාජයක්‌ රටේ ස්‌ථාපිත කර ලොව ජයගත හැකි අනාගත පරපුරක්‌ ඇති කරන බව මහින්ද රාජපක්‍ෂ මහතා පැවසීය.
මෙහිදී වැඩිදුරටත් අදහස්‌ දැක්‌වූ රාජපක්‍ෂ මහතා මෙසේ ද කීය.
රටක්‌ දියුණු කරන්න නම් හැමදාම එක තැන පල්වෙන්න දෙන්න බෑ. අපි ගතවුණු කාලේ මේ රටේ අධිවේගී මාර්ග හදන්න, ගම්බද පාරවල් කාපට්‌ කරන්න, රෝහල්වල, පාසල්වල තත්ත්වය ඉහළ නංවන්න විශාල වැඩ කොටසක්‌ කළා.
දැන් අපේ බලාපොරොත්තුව විනයගරුක සදාචාර සම්පන්න රටක්‌ හදන එකයි. අපට සංස්‌කෘතිය තියෙනවා. අපි ඒක රැකගන්න ඕනෑ. ඒ හරහා අපි ඉදිරියට යන්න ඕනෑ. ගමේ පාසල, කෝවිල, පල්ලිය මුල්කරගත්ත ගුණ දහමින් යුක්‌ත සමාජයක්‌ රටේ හදන්න ඕන යෑයි මහින්ද රාජපක්‍ෂ මහතා වැඩිදුරටත් පැවසීය.........

Elections Commissioner moves to free venues for Sirisena’s meeting

Asked whether his office would intervene in the event that the government continued to deny the common opposition venues for their meetings, Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya yesterday said, "my office has already intervened and through our Returning Officers have sorted all these issues in the electoral districts of Kurunegala, Kotmale and Attanagalle."

He further said his Returning Officers have spoken to the heads of the relevant Municipal Councils, and Pradeshiya Sabhas and have ensured that the opposition is given as much a chance of booking venues for political work as the government.

The UPFA resorted to booking all venues in various areas for their meetings and did not use them, preventing the opposition from using such spaces.

Deshapriya agreed that the situation in Biyagama, Kelaniya, Kotte and Maharagama may still require his intervention.

"I will be intervening in these areas also if there is a need. For the moment we are watching how things progress," he said.

Udaya’s defection underscores need to change political culture - Champika

The switching of allegiance by the party’s Deputy General Secretary Udaya Gammanpila to President Mahinda Rajapaksa would not affect the JHU at all, Jathika Hela Urumaya General Secretary Patali Champika Ranawaka said yesterday.

 Ranawaka said, "Gammanpila’s defection and change of stance clearly demonstrated the urgent need to change the political culture in the country which was detrimental to the country and it is a system created by the Rajapaksas to feather their nests at the expense of others."

 Addressing a news conference at the JHU headquarters at Battaramulla, the former Technology and Research Minister of the UPFA government said Gammanpila had agreed to conditions laid down in the MoU signed on December 1 and he was one of the main architects of drafting the proposals put forward to the President urging political and economic reforms, ratified at the JHU convention.................

If BBS backs govt. I won’t remain in it – Musthapha

Investment Promotion Deputy Minister Faizer Musthapha yesterday told the media that if the Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) backed the government either directly or indirectly, he would not remain in it because the intersts of his community had to be safeguarded first of all.

He was speaking at a media briefing at the SLFP headquarters yesterday.

Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) General Secretary and Petroleum Industries Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa said the government had not offered money to induce or prevent crossovers...................

‘රජය වෙනුවෙන් ඡන්ද වැඩ නොකරනු‘

ඡන්ද කමිසුරු රාජ්‍ය නාලිකාවලට අනතුරු අඟවයි

ජනපතිවරණයට තරඟ කරන මහින්ද රාජපක්ෂ ජනපතිට සහාය දක්වන වැඩසටහන් නතර කරන්නැයි මැතිවරණ කොමසාරිස් මහින්ද දේශප්‍රිය මහතා රාජ්‍ය  නාලිකාවලට දන්වයි.
රාජ්‍ය නාලිකා එළිපිටම ජනපති වෙනුවෙන් ඡන්ද සටනට සහයෝගය දෙතියි ස්වාධීන නිරීක්ෂකයන්ගෙන් පැමිණිලි ලැබී ඇතැයි දේශප්‍රිය මහතා පවසයි.
මෙම කටයුත්ත නිදහස් හා සාධාරණ මැතිවරණයකට බරපතල අවහිරයකියි  රාජ්‍ය විද්‍යුත් නාලිකාවලට ලිපියක් යවමින් කොමසාරිස් කියයි.
