The Civil Security Department’s (CSD) Director General (DG) yesterday urged politicians not to demoralise his service men who were rendering yeomen service to the country’s economy and social wellbeing in various spheres following the eradication of terrorism.

Addressing a briefing at the Media Centre of the Urban Development and Defence Ministry at Kollupitiya, Rear Adm. (Retd.) Ananda Peiris said that CSD personnel should not be insulted.
In most of the political rallies being held in the country, the Common Opposition Presidential Candidate Maithripala Sirisena had been accusing the government of deploying security personnel to do menial jobs.
Rear Admiral Ananda queried what his 40,000 men and women who had received arms training should do in peacetime. "They are using their skills as masons, carpenters, farmers, Montessori teachers in Killinochchi and Mullaitivu. They provide security to some state organisations such as court complexes, make bricks, cultivate barren state land, make clay pots, ekel brooms, and engage in various other such activities. They have earned Rs, 40 million in profit from those projects. He said that about 295 personnel, who had completed 20 years’ service joining as Home Guards in 1987 (now Civil Security Personnel after that department was gazetted in 2006 as Civil Security Department with the support of Defence Secretary and incumbent President), would receive their pension from January next year, as everything was ready at the moment according to the Director of Pensions.
"Tamils in Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu have evinced a keen interest in joining our service; we have received about 10,000 applications to join the CSD to earn a living after they observed the life styles of their fellow men and women. About 3,500 rehabilitated LTTE cadres including some Tamil people who were harassed by the LTTE are serving in CSD in those areas and they are happy now," the CSD chief said.
In the event of the death of a CSD member Rs. 1,000,000 would be deposited in a bank account for the benefit of his or her family, the Director General said.
