, Ranil Wickremesinghe - Military to intervene in elections?

The opposition leader, Ranil Wickremesinghe, stated before the foreign ambassadors and UN agents that the government has planned to use military officers to disturb the election process. According to this plan, the government will attempt, through the use of the military, to prevent people from the North, East and other provinces from casting their vote. He asserted that the soldiers on duty have been appointed under the supervision of retired military officers to function in this manner.

He further added that drills have been held by the government in regards to this attempt. He further said that the first one of the three documents of this program has already been received from inside the army and all the names appointed for this program is in the document.

He requested citizen to come and vote in the forthcoming presidential election despite any situation that may crop up on the day. He advised the government not to commit such ignorant acts and he further expressed that he will ensure both the election commissioner and the foreign election observers were aware of this plan.

According to the document military officers have been appointed in higher education institutions such as the Sabaragamuwa University. Some officers have appointed to different areas such as Hambantota and Galle while it also mentions that their duty is in the Colombo District Division No.2.
